Jesus told us to pray for our persecutors and to forgive our enemies. Really such a hard task to do isn’t it? Am sure each one of us has an enemy if not numerous of them somewhere. It could be someone wronged us such that we find difficulty in forgiving and forgetting that deed.
It is so human nature to wish that something worse happens to those particular enemies, but the Biblical teaching is contrary to this.
Obadiah, the shortest book in the Old Testament has this vital question, “How should we react when we see an enemy experience misfortune?” If someone has hurt us repeatedly or even once, it is easy to feel the pleasure when they experience misfortunes. The scripture however is against this. In Proverbs 24:17, we read, “ Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, and do not let your heart be glad when He stumbles.” Such a difficult thing to do, I know but we should obey the Bible.
We are to maintain an attitude of compassion and forgiveness and trust God to bring justice in His own time.
In handling people with problems, the book of Romans 12 tells us:
“Love for God can be measured by the love we show for our enemies.”
